Forthcoming change in the law relating to data protection

This change will inevitably increase the potential risks relating to the collection and use of personal data. From 6 April 2010 the Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO), the entity charged with overseeing and enforcing the Data Protection Act 1998 (the Act), will have the power to fine organisations up to £500,000 for serious contraventions of the Act.

Any organisation that collects or uses personal data about identifiable individuals such as its customers, suppliers or employees, should review its policies and procedures to ensure it is fully compliant with the Act.
