Children Challenging Industry Celebrates Its Tenth Anniversary with an Exciting Science Festival at the Catalyst Science Discovery Centre

The Chemical Industry Education Centre, University of York, is delighted to announce the Children Challenging Industry (CCI) science festival, an exciting event to celebrate the CCI project’s Tenth Anniversary in the North West. The project is sponsored by Chemicals Northwest, supported by the North West Development Agency.

The Children Challenging Industry (CCI) project, which began in 1996, aims to create enthusiasm for learning science amongst primary school children by providing classroom-based training for the teaching of the National Curriculum for Science. This, and liaison with local science-based manufacturing companies, enables pupils to see how the science they learn at school is used in a 'real life' context.

The CCI science festival aims to promote the CCI project to new companies and schools and to celebrate the work done by schools and industries that have participated in the CCI project in the last year. More than 100 attendees from industry, schools, colleges and key organizations are anticipated, these include David Mowat, Conservative MP for Warrington South, Dr Brian Iddon retired MP for Bolton South East Parliamentary seat,  and currently a Patron of Catalyst, the Deputy Mayor and Mayoress of Halton, the Managing Director of Total Petrochemicals UK and Dr Tony Bastock  OBE, Group Managing Director , Contract Chemicals.   The event will feature;

*  Practical demonstrations by fifteen North West companies

*  Displays of  work and practical demonstrations by ten schools

*  Planning site visits for primary pupils;  presentations by Eastman UK and Fiddler’s Ferry Power Station

The event is an ideal opportunity to meet representatives from a variety of science-based manufacturing companies across the region and to find out how they are helping to make industry exciting for primary pupils. You can also discover why the project continues to be so popular with children and their teachers.

The Catalyst Science Discovery Centre is an excellent venue. It has wonderful new facilities including state-of-the-art laboratories and an interactive theatre. Come and experience them for yourself!

The event will be held at Catalyst, Science Discovery Centre, Widnes, on Monday 5 July at 10.30am and will finish at 12.30 with a buffet lunch. To find out more, contact Sue Andrews, CCI Advisory Teacher, at sue.andrews@chemicalsnorthwest.org.uk
