Catalyst welcomes MP Derek Twigg

Local MP Derek Twigg stressed the importance of high quality science education for young and old during a recent visit to Catalyst Science Discovery Centre in Widnes.  During his visit Derek met with new Director Stephen Youd-Thomas and Chairman of the Friends of Catalyst, Chris Lewis for an update on recent events and to hear of the exciting plans for the future as the International Year of Chemistry approaches in 2011.

Commenting on his visit, Derek Twigg said “We are very fortunate to have a centre such as Catalyst in the borough to enthuse people of all ages about science and the important role it plays in our everyday lives. The team at Catalyst are passionate about making science exciting for school groups and the general public alike and I fully support them as they plan for the future under Stephen’s direction”.

Stephen Youd-Thomas, Director of Catalyst said “It was great to meet with Derek to share our plans for the development of Catalyst and we’re thrilled that he appreciates and understands the important part that we play in science education in the borough. We had a very busy summer with the best visitor figures since 2006 and we’re working with corporate sponsors to install a number of new interactive exhibits in the galleries early next year. We’re particularly excited about the events and activities planned for the International Year of Chemistry and pleased that Catalyst will be collaborating with the Association for Science and Discovery Centres to plan activities nationwide”.
