Global Drivers
Whilst there may still be some debate about the details of drivers, consensus seems clear that UK industry does not exist independently of global drivers. Those companies likely to be surviving and thriving into the next few decades are likely to be those who are most aware of the risks and opportunities that these drivers bring.(From Sir David King, ex Chief Scientific Advisor to Government): Population is the driver to all environmental problems. It looks like it will level out around 8 billion, but we need to be prepared for a near 9 billion population mid-century.
Some Global Drivers that need to be tackled (more details where links are present):
- WATER – We’re using and contaminating more, distribution is already a problem in many parts of the world, and many places are moving to more desalination (but this is a high energy solution, so exacerbates other issues)
- ENERGY SECURITY & SUPPLY – It is essential to de-carbonise our energy sources. 50% reduction in emissions by 2050 has been agreed by G8 nations, but more is needed if we are to meet IPCC recommendations. Vulnerability in oil/ gas availability and prices means that the UK also needs to look for alternative sources for energy sustainability purposes. This is discussed more in our Energy Supply and Operational Efficiency sections of this site.
- RESOURCES – Although energy and water are often cited as the most vulnerable resources to industry, we could also be reaching some critical times for some very important elements.
- FOOD PRODUCTION – With a 9-billion population prospect, more food will be needed from an ever decreasing productive land area. Is another green revolution required?
- BIODIVERSITY – Some advocates claim that biodiversity is aided, not hindered by GM, as it allows crops to be intensively rotated, and marginal land left for diverse crops.
- CONFLICT AND TERRORISM – Clearly affects reliability of supply chains and ease of logistics between countries
- HEALTH AND EDUCATION – with the rise in population also comes a change in the demographics of countries such as the UK. What options are there for people diagnosing and treating themselves at home, for example?
- CLIMATE CHANGE – As with population, climate change exacerbates all other drivers. More information on evidence, mitigation and adaptation here...(link to SD2.1)
