Children Challenging Industry

“The best bit about working with young people is seeing the excitement in their eyes when they see things that we take for granted.” George Oliver, Solvay

The Children Challenging Industry (CCI) project gives key stage 2 pupils (aged 8-11) an opportunity to work with a science advisory teacher in the classroom on practical science investigations set within an industrial context. The classroom session is then followed up by a visit to a local company to see science in action in an industrial setting.

As well as offering pupils and their teachers a valuable learning experience, CCI provides significant benefits to the companies involved, including:

  • Facilitating corporate social responsibility through engagement with the local community.
  • Taking an active role in improving the quality of science education teaching.
  • Improving the communication of employees and enhancing morale.
  • Encouraging employees’ personal development.
At the end of each academic year, a closing celebration event brings together the companies involved in the programme and a number of the young scientists to showcase the learning that has taken place and to highlight the excitement  that the children feel towards science and in particular, chemistry.
