Advancing Plastic Electronics with Nanotechnology

Nanotechnology works hand in hand with the development of plastic electronics, the following examples give an idea of the ways collaborative interdisciplinary efforts can provide solutions to challenges and to overcome barriers in further developing of novel electronic products and devices.
Barrier Layers: Devices such as flexible OLED displays, lighting modules and organic solar cells are sensitive to oxygen and moisture which compromises device lifetime significantly. Development of cost effective, high quality barrier layers is key to the commercialisation of many of these new products and devices. Nanotechnology is able to help “plug the gaps” and provide barrier films with exceptional integrity.
Sensor Technologies: Printed sensors and actuators are showing very promising signs of rapid improvement.
Conductive Inks and ITO Replacements – soln: nano-particles, nano-wires and nano-lines: A large variety of different conductive inks are now available.
The inks were differentiated on the basis of their application, conductivity and price. Conductive inks offering high levels of optical transparency are also becoming a viable ITO replacement option.
Advances in nanotechnology are moving hand in hand with applications for plastic electronics. There is a growing list of examples that help realise electronics based on novel material formulations and processes, used in a wide range of applications, making new devices and performance improvements possible.
This workshop will highlight some of the issues facing plastic electronics and illustrate how some of the advances of Nanotechnologies are being employed to make plastic electronics more viable.
